Past Productions

January 2016
Lighting Designer - Company
United Players, Vancouver, BC
• Lightiing design for a production of Stephen Sondehim's Company. The production was directed by Brian Parkinson, musical direction Claire Wyatt, choreography Julie Tomaino, scenic design Brian Ball, sound effects by Sean Anthony, and costume design by Jordan Navratil. Company was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver.
• Review: "A live band under killer pianist and music director Clare Wyatt played their hearts out, and with Julie Tomaino's snappy choreography contributed hugely to the energy and fizz of the performance. Apt spotlighting and more subtle effects were provided by Randy Poulis' lighting design....Director Brian Parkinson has focused on the warmer side of dark comedy, allowing the compromises we make and the failings we all have to be willingly accepted in return for as much love and company as we find tolerable. Perfect for a cold winter's night. " — Elizabeth Paterson, Review Vancouver
• Review: "United Players of Vancouver's production of Company features uniformly strong singing and choreography work. The cast features a who's who of Vancouver musical theatre talent . . . ." — Daniel Chai, VanCity Buzz
• Review: "The musical theatre genius of Stephen Sondheim is nowhere better displayed than in his 1970 creation, Company, and this ambitious United Players production is pretty much a knockout from beginning to end. " — Jerry Wasserman, VancouverPlays

January 2016
Lighting Designer - A Man For All Seasons
United Players, Vancouver, BC
• Lightiing design for a production of Robert Bolt's A Man For All Seasons. The production was directed by William B. Davis, original score by John Mills-Cockell, scenic design John R. Taylor, and costume design by Catherine E. Carr. A Man For All Seasons was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver.
• Review: "John R. Taylor's set design is vast, handsome and very masculine with stairs and various playing areas all subtlety lit by Randy Poulis. Costumes by Catherine E. Carr are a mixed bag of exceptionally fine period gowns, capes and hats (by milliner Frances Herzer) and some costumes that are simply adequate: budget limitations are apparent." — Jo Ledingham, Vancouver Courier
• Review: "Director Davis gets good work from his cast of ten . . . John R. Taylor has done wonders with the barnlike space, designing an attractive, functional, multilevel set that makes Jericho Arts Centre's stage seem half-again larger than usual. Catherine E. Carr's handsome period costumes convey a visual richness that belies United Players' modest budget. In the post-Playhouse era we're likely to get a revival of a play like this only from a company like United Players, most of whose participants go unpaid, and we should be grateful for the care and intelligence with which they've given it to us." — Jerry Wasserman, VancouverPlays
• Review: "Watching the current production of Robert Bolt's "A Man For All Seasons" unfold at the Jericho Arts Centre is like watching a master painter at work. You already know what the picture may look like at the end, but the amazing colours and masterful brush strokes keep you mesmerized to the end." — Entertainment Vancouver

June 2015
Lighting Designer - The Imaginary Invalid
United Players, Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for a production of Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid. The production was directed by Michael Fera, Music Director Pat Unruh, Choreography Jessie Au, scenic design Todd R. Parker, and costume design by Jackie Talmey-Lennon. The Imaginary Invalid was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver.
• Review: "The set by Todd R. Parker is attractive, the costumes by Jackie Talmey-Lennon lavish, and Randy Poulis' lighting subtle. Moliere’s quicksilver, colloquial prose flows.... Pat Unruh’s music evokes the gorgeous, formal, courtly world Molière and his company inhabited." — Elizabeth Paterson, Review Vancouver
• Review: "The Imaginary Invalid at the Jericho Arts Theatre is a brilliant United Players production. The costumes, the singing, the distinct voices and performances are spectacular....This is a clever and amusing performance that will keep the audience captivated and entertained. Accolades go to the actors and the production staff." — Maria Figueiredo, Review Vancouver
• Review: "Presented by United Players, this is an ambitious undertaking. Set design by Todd R. Parker is handsome with its glittering chandelier. The production comes in at just over two hours, shorter than some productions I’ve seen — although it feels longer. But there are successes here, too, especially in Fera’s fresh framing of the play within the context of 17th century France and the life and death of Moliere." — Jo Ledingham, Vancouver Courier

November 2014
Lighting Designer - Facts
United Players, Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for a production of Arthur Milner's Facts. The production was directed by Adam Henderson, Composer Tim Gerwing, scenic design Andrew Pye, sound design by Scott Zechner and costume design by Catherine E. Carr. Facts was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver.
• Review: "Director Adam Henderson gets a lot of things right in this handsome United Players production, chief among them the casting of Jerry Wasserman as Yossi and Mehdi Darvish as Khalid.... Andrew Pye contributes the simple and forceful concrete slab of a set, which Randy Poulis lights dramatically. The sound, by composer Tim Gerwing and sound designer Scott Zechner effectively ups the ante." — Colin Thomas, Georgia Straight
• Review: "Adam Henderson, directing for United Players, sets the play in the round, creating an intimacy that make Facts rivetting. You won’t doze off; you can't doze off. You are in that room with Yassin, HaCohen and Danny Rakoff (James Gill) and when HaCohen starts getting physical with Rakoff, it's scary." — Jo Ledingham, Vancouver Courier

June 2014
Lighting Designer - The Marriage of Figaro
United Players, Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for a production of Pierre-Augustin de Beaumarchais' The Marriage of Figaro. The production was directed by Adam Henderson, Musical Directors Chris Robson and Adam Henderson, scenic design by John R. Taylor, sound design by Scott Zechner and costume design by Chanel McCartney. The Marriage of Figaro was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver.
• Review: "Adam Henderson has adapted and directed the script in a freewheeling manner that matches the rebellious material. Characters speak, they sing snippets from the opera, and they stamp their feet like flamenco dancers when they're feeling passionate." — Colin Thomas, Georgia Straight
• Review: "It may not be as revolutionary as when it first premiered in 18th century France, but Adam Henderson's adaptation of Pierre Augustin de Beaumarchais’s The Marriage of Figaro is sometimes so well-crafted that you forget how subversive it once was, and simply go on for the ridiculously funny ride." — Mark Robins, Vancouver Presents

January 2014
Lighting Designer - Rebel Women
Vital Spark Theatre Company, Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for the premiere of Joan Bryan's Rebel Women. The production was directed by Joan Bryans with musical direction by Pat Unruh, scenic design by Sean Malmas, projection design by Carol Mann, sound design by Darren Hales and costume design by Jenny Lang. Rebel Women was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver.
• Review: "Thanks to director/creator Joan Bryans, I will never enter a polling booth again without thinking of Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928), leader of the British suffragette movement back in the early days of the 20th century. It's easy to forget how these courageous activists paved the way for the rest of us. The excruciating re-enactment in Rebel Women of the forced feeding of the jailed members of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) will make it impossible for me to pass up the hard-won privilege of voting even if 'none of the above' is how I would like to mark my ballot.... Vital Spark, Bryans' theatre company – strikes sparks again." — Jo Ledingham, Vancouver Courier
• Review: "In prison the women further escalate their resistance, refusing to eat. When the authorities respond to their hunger strikes by force-feeding, the play really takes off. The first act ends with a series of powerful scenarios involving Wallace Dunlop (MariaLuisa Alvarez) and Lady Constance Lytton (Jenny McLaren), an aristocrat who disguised herself as a working-class woman so as not to be given special treatment, graphically illustrating the tortures these women underwent and the courage with which they endured them for the cause. This is genuinely stirring theatre." — Jerry Wasserman, Vancouver Province
• Review: "I entered the show wondering why the decision to perform a show here with such a focus on England's history, rather than Canada's, (though there are a number of small links to the Canadian movement as well). As the play ended, however, Rebel Women had convinced me that this was a story well worth telling, and well worth knowing." — Andrew Wade, GVPTA - Vancouver Live Theatre News

Sept 2013
Lighting Designer - The Habit Of Art
United Players, Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for the Canadian premiere of Alan Bennett's The Habit of Art. The production was directed by William B. Davis with scenic design by Brian G. Ball, costume design by Emmanuelle Davis and sound design by Neil Griffith. The Habit of Art was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver.
• Review: "Director William B. Davis once again proves himself to be an actors' director, playing up nuance after nuance of the emotional entanglements, not only with respect to his principals, but also the brightly shining lesser lights, and yielding up collaborative, interactive excellence in a highly watchable play. . . . There is plenty of elegance, charm, wit and humour to go round in this compelling dramatic piece of meta-theatre, and it may go a long way to proving that for many people the habit of art, is not so much an acquired habit as it is a required habit. You will definitely want to see The Habit of Art to consider whether or not you are one of those people. Or just to have an incredibly good time. I know I did." — Roger Wayne Eberle, Review Vancouver, September, 2013
• Review: "Daring to open its season during the Fringe Festival, United Players is offering counter-programming with a vengeance. Alan Bennett's The Habit of Art, getting its Canadian premiere under the direction of X-Files Smoking Man William B. Davis, may be the ultimate anti-Fringe play: talky, very artsy, rather highbrow and deeply English. . . . That said, play and production are full of enjoyable moments. — Jerry Wasserman, Vancouver Province, September, 2013
• Review: "Ably directed by William B. Davis and produced by United Players, The Habit of Art is not casual viewing but it’s definitely stimulating and thought provoking. — Jo Ledingham, Vancouver Courier, September, 2013

January 2013
Lighting Designer - Hecuba
United Players, Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for the world premiere of Euripides' Hecuba adapted by Nicholas Kilmer. The production was directed by Charles Siegel with scenic design by Jessica Oostergo, costume design by Brandi Rawluk, and orignial sound composition and design by Daniel Marshall. Hecuba was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver.
• Review: "Nicholas Kilmer has penned a new, astonishingly accessible adaptation of Hecuba specifically for this world premiere, and it does not disappoint. Even more importantly, as director Charles Siegel commented, the collaboration of cast and crew is what gives this production its unique vigour and vitality. In fact, this production itself is even more accessible than the script, and more compelling than any other version of this play I have seen. " — Roger Wayne Eberle, Review Vancouver, January, 2012
• Review: "With battle-weary, raggedy costumes by Brandi Rawluk, Jessica Oostergo's sand circle set and a cast of thirteen, Hecuba is a huge undertaking. United Players, once again, shows boldness in its programming and shrewdness in its reminder that the really big questions are still rattling around twenty-five hundred years after Greece's magnificent Classical period." — Jo Ledingham,On The Scene, February 11, 2013

Sept 2012
Lighting Designer - Bluff
North Vancouver Community Players, North Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for Jeffrey Sweet's Bluff. The production was directed by Stephen Torrence with scenic design by Glynnis Brassil and sound design by Stephen Torrence. Bluff was performed at Hendry Hall in North Vancouver.

April 2012
Lighting Designer - Bea's Niece
North Vancouver Community Players, North Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for a production of David Gow's Bea's Niece. The production was performed at Hendry Hall in North Vancouver.
• Review: "Bea's Niece . . . is David Gow's mental mystery about a woman in a psychiatric institution who has 'lost her place in time.' It's a challenging script and one that confuses by design at times, but director Karen Golden and an excellent cast offer sufficient clues and clarity that what is fantasy and what is reality are fairly easy to discern - truth is always more difficult since everyone has their own version." — Martin Millerchip, NorthShoreNews

October 2011
Director/Lighting Designer - The Woman In Black
North Vancouver Community Players, North Vancouver, BC
• Directed and designed the lighting for a production of Stephen Mallatratt's The Woman In Black. The production was performed at Hendry Hall in North Vancouver.
• Review: "The performance was well paced and enjoyable, particularly the special attention given to the nuances of each and every character used to advance the story. The cast and crew managed to bring the story to life, although the audience must indulge them a bit with imagination - something they request of the audience rather subtly in the beginning. The more that you lend to the play, the more you will get out of it." — Greg Ewan, ReviewVancouver

April 2011
Lighting Designer - Rosmersholm
United Players, Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for Henrik Ibsen's Rosmersholm. The production was directed by Sarah Rodgers with scenic design by Marshall McMahen, costume design by Karen Mirfield, and sound design by David Campbell. Rosmersholm was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver.
• Review: "Go see this show. . . . Marshall McMahen offers a minimalist set design, with the audience seated on both sides. A stand of young trees on one end — beautifully lit by Randy Poulis — is elegance itself. Costumer Karen Mirfield contributes handsomely cut and pleasingly textured clothing." — Colin Thomas, Georgia Straight, April 4, 2011
• Review: "(Sarah) Rodgers has inspired a light touch wherever she could. Set designer Marshall McMahen replaces the usual dark parlour and simmering woodstove of other Ibsen productions with bleached pine floors, white suspended picture and window frames beyond which stand white trees just waiting to leaf out. And costume designer Karen Mirfield puts Rebecca West in a lacy ivory gown, not the somber woolen dresses we so often see on Ibsen's heroines. Lighting designer Randy Poulis keeps the set airy and light, too. It could be spring. It could be the setting for a love story. And I suppose in a way, it is." — Jo Ledingham, Vancouver Courier, April 8, 2011
• Review: "By far, this has been the best production I've seen by United Players. The actors were flawless in their delivery of lines, and the set design was simple yet extremely beautiful. I won't be surprised if Jessie award winner Sarah Rodgers will get another award for directing this Ibsenian classic, as well as the technical production staff for this magnificent production. . . . Special kudos to the production staff, particularly to Marshall McMahen for his set design and Karen Mirfield for her costume design." — Ed Farolan, ReviewVancouver, April 2, 2011

April 2011
Lighting Designer - If We Are Women
North Vancouver Community Players, North Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for Joanna McClelland Glass's If We Are Women. The production was directed by Stephen Torrence with scenic design by Stephen Torrence, and sound design by Anne Marsh. If We Are Women was performed at Hendry Hall in North Vancouver.
• Review: "I saw the premiere of this play at the Vancouver Playhouse in 1994. It was an excellent production featuring Diane D'Aquila and a young Ruth McIntosh. Setting aside quibbles about the North Van set and sound design, I was going to say that the local production is just as good. But to be absolutely fair, 17 years is a long time and that wouldn't be an apples-to-apples comparison. What I can say for sure is that the NVCP actors, under the able direction of Stephen Torrence, moved me just as much the second time around." — Martin Millerchip, North Shore News April 15, 2011

April 2011
Lighting Designer - Spring Forward
Vital Spark Theatre, Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for Joan Bryan's Spring Forward. The musical production was directed by Joan Bryans with musical direction by Pat Unruh, costume design by Catherine Carr and sound design by Darren Hales. Spring Forward was performed at Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver.

November 2010
Lighting Designer - Mrs. Klein
United Players, Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for Nicholas Wright's Mrs. Klein. The production was directed by Charles Siegel with scenic design by Stacey Sherlock, costume design by Catherine E. Carr, and sound design by Kaden O'Reilly. Mrs. Klein was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver
• Review: "Joan Bryans is superb in Klein's dialogue-heavy role. Her interpretation of this brilliant woman is impressive as the role shifts between concerned mother and detached therapist. Trina McClure as Paula provides the appropriate poignancy for the protege and Alison James Raine delivers a gut-wrenching performance as Melitta. The shabby chic set, period outfits and soft lighting provide the atmosphere." — Tova G. Kornfeld, Jewish Independent, Nov. 19, 2010
• Review: "This United Players production is strong, the performances excellent, but these three women are so screwed up, I came away shaking my head." — Jo Ledingham, Vancouver Courier, Nov. 19, 2010

March 2010
Lighting Designer - Breath of Life
United Players, Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for the Canadian Premiere of David Hare's The Breath of Life. The production was directed by Adam Henderson with scenic design by Susan Dalton and Ana Luisa Espinoza, costume design by Catherine E.Carr, and sound design by Jeff Gladstone. The Breath of Life was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver
• Review: "I loved the set and props - all those books made me feel quite at home - design by Ana Luisa Espinoza Vaca, and Susan Dalton with lighting by Randy Poulis; and Dave Campbell evoked seaside and beaches with his sound design." — [Re]View From The House, April 2010

January 2010
Lighting Designer - Ivanov
United Players, Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for Anton Chekov's Ivanov. The production was directed by Victor Vasuta with scenic design by John Taylor, costume design by Oleksandra Lykova and sound design by Jeff Gladstone. Ivanov was performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver
• Review: "United Players has done it again - tackling a classic play with a big cast, something that our larger professional theatres wouldn't dare (and couldn't afford) to do, and presenting it with sufficient skill and flourish that we leave the theatre delighted at having had the chance to see it." — Jerry Wasserman, VancouverPlays, Sept. 2009
• Review: "John R. Taylor's dove grey set was ringed above with a semi-circle of bare white, stylized tree branches (evocative of The Cherry Orchard)and Oleksandra Lykova's period costumes - especially the gowns in grey, beige and ivory--were elegant. . . . Randy Poulis's lighting played prettily on the set and furniture which was grey and, unexpectedly, more IKEA than late nineteenth century Russian." — Jo Ledingham, Vancouver Courier, February 2010

October 2009
Lighting Designer - Light Sensitive
North Vancouver Community Players, North Vancouver, BC
• Lighting design for a production of Jim Geoghan's play Light Sensitive. The production was directed by Stephen Torrence with scenic design by David Read and performed at Hendry Hall in North Vancouver.

• Lighting design for a production of William Congreve's The Way of the World. The production was directed by Adam Henderson with scenic design by John Taylor, costume design by Jenny Lang, sound design by Ronin Wong and performed at the Jericho Arts Centre in Vancouver.
• Review: "Don't miss the opportunity to see this wonderful play in this surprisingly fine production." — Jerry Wasserman, VancouverPlays, Sept. 2009
• Review: "Adam Henderson and his company are giving the United Players a wonderful fiftieth season's opening present. All theatre lovers should join the party and bring their friends to this splendid celebration." — Jane Penistan, Review Vancouver, Sept. 2009.
• Review: "The Way of the World minced into the Jericho Arts Centre last night and gob-smacked the crowd with wit, repartee, epigrams, raillery, cant and delightful double-dealing. Adam Henderson has directed this double-edged soufflé of a production with care and class - and a cast that was more than up to the task of making a Restoration comedy from 1700 funny for the 21st Century." — Sean Allan , Review from the House Sept. 2009.

Lighting Designer - Animal Farm
Kaleidoscope Theatre, Victoria, BC
• Lighting design for Ian Ferguson's adaption of George Orwell's Animal Farm. The production was directed by Ian Ferguson with scenic design by Sabrina Miller and performed at the Belfry Theatre in Victoria.
• Review: "There is music and clever sound and cool lighting effects, all of which draw the audience in quite effectively. . . . There's a lot to like in this show and director/playwright Ian Ferguson has done a very good job in bringing Orwell's warning about the corruption of power to a new audience." — Monica Prendergast, CBC Radio, May 26, 2008.
• Review: "Adapted for the stage by Vancouver humourist and award-winning playwright Ian Ferguson, the new Animal Farm is clever, fast paced, and retains the same strong message as the original version. . . . The set, designed by Sabrina Miller, is fantastic, functional and ornate at the same time. There's hand drawn detail on everything, from the sheep to the shirts the actors are wearing, and the set design shows ingenuity." — Steve Carey, Victoria Times Colonist, May 25, 2008.
• Review: "Fast-paced and funny, it switches from overly silly to moving to downright disturbing as fast as you can drop-kick a plush goat across the stage. Watching Animal Farm is a rare opportunity to see three inspiring performances in a unique adaptation of Orwell’s classic." — Sarah Gignac , Monday Magazine, May 28, 2008.

• Review: "Successful farce requires many things . . . the superior production also needs an almost indefinable something else; a certain effervescence, a champagne-like zing . . . . Whatever it is, the Victoria Theatre Guild's new production of Moon over Buffalo has got it." — Adrian Chamberlain, Victoria Times Colonist, Jan. 11, 2008.

• Review: "Beautifully crafted and extremely engaging. . . . Victoria sculptor Mowry Baden created the naturalistic set, depicting an ordinary Anytown, U.S.A, house in a manner that balances nostalgia with realism. Randy Poulis' soft, autumnal lighting helps as well." — Adrian Chamberlain, Victoria Times Colonist, April 14, 2005.
• Review: "Mowry Baden's graceful set design (with literally thousands of hand-painted leaves) and Randy Poulis' scenic ambient lighting add some nice touches of outward beauty to the internally troubled lives of the characters. Langham Court brings clarity and compassion to Miller's unflinching script. . . ." — Megan Stewart, Monday Magazine, April 20, 2006.
