Duck Nestboxes

Stewardship of the lake through personal practises.

Nestbox There will be increased sensitivity and actions of Williams Lake and area residents towards the interrelationship and values established within the watershed. Individuals will have an opportunity to participate in direct action with observable and measurable results. This commitment to action will help to direct individual activities towards those that are more in harmony with sustaining the quality of the watershed that we all share.

Overview

The overall goal is to have area residents become stewards of their local environment, to change their approach and activities that impact water quality and to monitor those activities. This bird nesting project involves habitat improvement and enhancement of appropriate areas impacted by human activity.

Wood Ducks Specific objectives are to have 50 waterfowl nest boxes erected, and 6 eagle/osprey nest trees set up. These actions will increase the duck population, encourage less disturbance to nesting birds, build public awareness of the lake as part of the whole watershed ecosystem and improve the quality of the lake system in general.

Goals and Objectives Public awareness of the lake as an ecosystem that is affected by human activity and can be rehabilitated will be affected by the media coverage, direct personal action and the enjoyment of the bird life. Aspects of the vision statement will be accomplished by promoting an increase in the bird population through the construction, erection, and monitoring of nesting sites.

The duck boxes will attract cavity nesting waterfowl such as Hooded Merganser, Wood Duck, Bufflehead and Barrows Golden Eye, birds that normally nest on Williams Lake. A substantive increase in the total bird population will occur. In addition to these species, Kestrels and owls may be encouraged to use the boxes erected. A goal will be to have 50 boxes built, installed and monitored for the next three years. A second objective is to have six trees set up suitable for raptors such as bald eagles and osprey. Thanks!

Through the efforts and good work of many volunteers we raised over $700, received excellent press coverage in the local media and got a nice interview on CBC! There are now over 50 boxes up on the lake after our project added another 12 this year. We are looking for even greater additions next year.

THANK-YOU EVERYONE!
